The PSTP is thrilled to announce that Malini Sharma has been selected by the American Society of Hematology (ASH) as one of four medical students to receive the 2023-2024 ASH Medical Student Physician-Scientist (PhySci) Award. Malini’s project, mentored jointly by Julia Hsu, MD and Adam Straub, PhD, is titled "Evaluation of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibition via GSK360A on fetal hemoglobin induction and erythropoiesis in sickle cell disease." The general aim of the project is to test the efficacy and safety of the drug GSK360A as a novel treatment for anemia in SCD. She will evaluate its potential to induce fetal hemoglobin, correct anemia and improve iron mobilization in SCD.

“During this year of research, I am thrilled to expand my knowledge of sickle cell disease progression and treatment, as well as continue developing as a physician scientist. I feel so fortunate to have received this award and am grateful to my mentors and classmates for encouraging and supporting me throughout my journey.”

Malini joined the PSTP in June of 2021 after spending 3 years at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In her free time, the Bryn Mawr graduate enjoys rock climbing, painting, and spending time with her friends.

Wonderful job, Malini!
