The University of Pittsburgh’s Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) may accept a small number of current School of Medicine second-year medical students into the training program based on their outstanding scholastic performance and demonstrated progress in research pursuits during their medical school experience. Generally, between zero and two internal applicants are accepted into the program each year. 

At least a summer’s worth of previous medical school research experience in a sponsoring lab is required to receive internal consideration.

Applicants must submit an application that includes a description of their previous research experiences, a discussion of their proposed research project, and an outline of their training plan.  Internal applicants are also required to  provide two letters of recommendation.  One of these letters must be from the applicant’s sponsoring mentor.
